Wednesday of the Twenty-fourth week in Ordinary Time

First Letter to Timothy

3,14-16.

Beloved: I am writing you, although I hope to visit you soon.
But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.
Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion, Who was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up in glory.

Psalms

111(110),1-2.3-4.5-6.

I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart
in the company and assembly of the just.
Great are the works of the LORD,
exquisite in all their delights.
Majesty and glory are his work,
and his justice endures forever.
He has won renown for his wondrous deeds;
gracious and merciful is the LORD.
He has given food to those who fear him;
He will forever be mindful of his covenant.
He has made known to his people the power of his works,
giving them the inheritance of the nations.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

7,31-35.

Jesus said to the crowds: “To what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?
They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.'
For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, 'He is possessed by a demon.'
The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'
But wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

St. Andrew Kim Taegon & St. Paul Chong Hasang & Companions(Martyrs)

St. Andrew Kim Taegon & St. Paul Chong Hasang & companions Martyrs (19th century) The evangelization of Korea began in the 17th century through a group of lay persons. A strong, vigorous Christian community flourished there under lay leadership. Later on, missionaries arrived from the Paris Foreign Mission Society. During persecutions in the 19th century (1839, 1866 and 1867), one hundred and three Christians were martyred. Among them was the first Korean priest, Andrew Kim Taegon, and the lay apostle Paul Chong Hasang. Other victims of the persecutions included bishops, priests, men, women and children. By giving their souls to God and laying down their lives, they were united to Jesus. Pope John Paul II visited Korea and canonized the Martyrs on May 6, 1984. They reign with Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary forever.

Sts. Eustachius and Companions(Martyrs († 2nd century))

SAINTS EUSTACHIUS and Companions Martyrs ( 2nd century) St. Eustachius, called "Placidus" before his conversion, was a distinguished officer in the Roman army under the emperor Trajan. One day, while hunting, he saw between the horns of a stag the image of our crucified Savior. Responsive to what he considered a voice from heaven, he became a Christian and was baptized. Although Christians were facing persecution, Eustachius would not deny Jesus. This humble officer had received a sense of life that the world cannot give (Jn. 14:27). Eventually, he lost his possessions, his rank and had his wife and children taken away. Nevertheless, he remained steadfast. Reduced to abject poverty, Eustachius became the servant of a rich land-owner and tended the latter's fields. Meanwhile, the Roman population was getting trampled by barbarian hordes. In desperation, Trajan sought out Eustachius and placed him in command of troops sent to fight the enemy. During the campaign, Eustachius found his wife and children. Triumphant in battle, Eustachius returned home decorated with honors. However, Trajan demanded Eustachius offer pagan sacrifice. The latter steadfastly refused; and in retaliation, Trajan threw Eustachius, with his wife and children, to two starving lions. Instead of harming them, the lions frisked and frolicked around them. With deadened conscience, Trajan ordered the family to be burnt to death inside a bronze bull. Eustachius and his family were martyred for simply living their faith as Christians. They reign with Jesus Christ and Mama Mary forever, receiving our prayers and giving them to God with perfected humility.
