Catholic Missal of the day: Tuesday, October 3 2023

Tuesday of the Twenty-sixth week in Ordinary Time

Book of Zechariah

8,20-23.

Thus says the LORD of hosts: There shall yet come peoples, the inhabitants of many cities;
and the inhabitants of one city shall approach those of another, and say, "Come! let us go to implore the favor of the LORD"; and, "I too will go to seek the LORD."
Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to implore the favor of the LORD.
Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days ten men of every nationality, speaking different tongues, shall take hold, yes, take hold of every Jew by the edge of his garment and say, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."

Psalms

87(86),1-3.4-5.6-7.

His foundation upon the holy mountains,
the LORD loves:
the gates of Zion,
more than any dwelling of Jacob.
Glorious things are said of you,
O city of God!
I tell of Egypt and Babylon
among those who know the LORD;
of Philistia, Tyre, Ethiopia:
"This man was born there."
and of Zion they shall say:
“One and all were born in her;
and he who has established her
is the Most High LORD.”
They shall note, when the peoples are enrolled:
"This man was born there."
And all shall sing, in their festive dance:
"My home is within you."

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

9,51-56.

When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,
and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there,
but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.
When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"
Jesus turned and rebuked them,
and they journeyed to another village.

St. Mother Théodore Guérin (1798-1856)()

SAINT MOTHER THÉODORE GUÉRIN With trust in God’s providence, St. Mother Théodore left her homeland, sailed halfway around the world, andfounded a new religious congregation. Born in Etables, France, Anne-Thérèse Guerin’s life was shattered by her father’s murder when she was 15. For several years afterward, she cared for her mother and younger sister. She entered the Sisters of Providence in 1823, taking the name Sister St. Théodore. An illness during her novitiate left her with lifelong fragile health, but that did not stop her from becoming an accomplished teacher. In 1840, at the invitation of the bishop of Vincennes, Sister St. Théodore and five sisters were sent to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, to teach and care for the poor. There, she established a motherhouse and novitiate. For several months, the sisters and their hosts lived packed into a small frontier farmhouse. Only later did they learn that their French superiors wanted them to form a new religious congregation. Despite their humble resources, in July 1841, Sister St. Théodore and the sisters opened St. Mary's Academy for Young Ladies, which later became Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Her doubts concerning the success of the institution were natural. She wrote in her journal, "It is astonishing that this remote solitude has been chosen for a novitiate and especially for an academy. All appearances are against it." For more than a decade, from 1841 to 1852, this Academy was the only Catholic boarding school for girls in Indiana. Sister St. Théodore and her community persevered despite fires, crop failures, prejudice against Catholic women religious, misunderstandings and separation from their original religious congregation. She once told her sisters, “Have confidence in the Providence that so far has never failed us. The way is not yet clear. Grope along slowly. Do not press matters; be patient, be trustful.” Another time, she asked, “With Jesus, what shall we have to fear?” Sister St. Théodoreproved to be a skilled businesswoman and leader as well as a beloved general superior. St. Mother Théodore is buried in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. She is known for her advancement of education and founding numerous parish schools. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in October 1998; and canonized on October 15, 2006, by Pope Benedict XVI.

St. Gerard of Brogne(Abbot († 959))

SAINT GERARD OF BROGNEAbbot( 959) Saint Gerard was from a patrician family of Namur, France. His engaging humor, mild temperament and inclination to piety revealed an active will and intellect conformed to the Divine. On an important mission to the Royal Court, Gerard was struck by the fervor of the monks of St. Denis at Paris. Edified by their example, he earnestly desired to consecrate himself to God along with them. Returning home, he settled his temporal affairs and went back with great joy to St. Denis'. Gerard nourished his supernatural virtues at the monastery for ten years before returning to Brogne in 931. He reformed the clergy and helped appoint holy monks to ecclesiastical offices. Gerard also built himself a cell near the church, where he contemplated God while reforming many other monasteries. After spending another twenty years in loving labors, Gerard shut himself up in his cell to prepare for death. He was called by Jesus to Paradise on October 3, 959.
