Catholic Missal of the day: Friday, October 21 2022

Friday of the Twenty-ninth week in Ordinary Time

Letter to the Ephesians

4,1-6.

Brothers and sisters : I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received,
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love,
striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace:
one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Psalms

24(23),1-2.3-4ab.5-6.

The LORD's are the earth and its fullness;
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD?
or who may stand in his holy place?
One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean,
who desires not what is vain.
He shall receive a blessing from the LORD,
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

12,54-59.

Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does;
and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot--and so it is.
You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

St. Hilarion(Abbot and Hermit (291-371))

SAINT HILARION Abbot and Hermit (291-371) St. Hilarion was born near Gaza. While studying grammar in Alexandria, he encountered Jesus Christ. After meeting the Just and Holy One through seeking and inviting God into his heart, St. Hilarion visited St. Antony in the Arabian desert and became a solitary at fifteen years old. Monks and disciples thronged the desert where St. Hilarion lived; drawn there by his sanctity. He thus moved to another country seeking greater solitude. However, miracles of mercy often announced his presence. Even his last retreat at Cyprus was broken by a paralytic, who was cured by St. Hilarion, but then magnified the Saint and spread his fame. Alban Butler paraphrases St. Hilarion's final moments, saying, "Go forth, my soul; why dost thou doubt? Thou hast served God nigh seventy years and dost thou fear death?" Living selflessly, St. Hilarion beheld his true love in the moments before passing on. He had long ago died to self and lived for God.

St. Ursula(Virgin and Martyr († 453))

SAINT URSULA Virgin and Martyr ( 453) A number of Christian families entrusted the education of their children to pious St. Ursula, and some persons of the world had in like manner placed themselves under her direction. England being harassed by the Saxons, Ursula sought asylum in Gaul like many of her contemporaries. She established an abode on the borders of the Rhine, not far from Cologne, where she hoped to find undisturbed repose. A horde of Huns invaded the country, and Ursula and her community were harmed and humiliated. Unwavering, the women chose death over shame. Ursula edified her Sisters, who were killedtogether in 453 A.D. St. Ursula is veneratedthroughout the Church. She is a patroness for young persons and teachers.
