Saturday of the Thirty-fourth week in Ordinary Time

Book of Revelation

22,1-7.

John said: An angel showed me the river of life-giving water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
down the middle of its street. On either side of the river grew the tree of life that produces fruit twelve times a year, once each month; the leaves of the trees serve as medicine for the nations.
Nothing accursed will be found there anymore. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.
They will look upon his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
Night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign forever and ever.
And he said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true, and the Lord, the God of prophetic spirits, sent his angel to show his servants what must happen soon."
"Behold, I am coming soon." Blessed is the one who keeps the prophetic message of this book.

Psalms

95(94),1-2.3-5.6-7.

Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;
let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
For the LORD is a great God,
And a great king above all gods;
In his hands are the depths of the earth,
And the tops of the mountains are his.
His is the sea, for he has made it,
And the dry land, which his hands have formed.
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

21,34-36.

Jesus said to his disciples: "Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise
like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth.
Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man."

St. Peter of Alexandria(Bishop & Martyr († 311))

SAINT PETER OF ALEXANDRIA, Bishop, Martyr ( 311) St. Peter governed the Church of Alexandria during the persecution of Diocletian. He was the first to excommunicate Melitius and Arius, the schismatics. Upholding the Apostles Creed and the Church's Traditions, St. Peter resisted both secular forces and heretical sabotage to guide the Church through this tumultuous period. St. Peter and the bishops before him shielded their flock from persecution: the first recorded civil rights movement in Western History. Founded upon free speech and dialogue, the Church raised up the Western world from the darkness of pagan sacrifice; raising up the dignity of man and woman; and through Jesus' ministry making them worthy of God Himself. After guarding Christians from being murdered, the Pope resisted the efforts of heretics to hijack the Church. Heresy always turns the mood against the mind, says Chesterton. Arius encouraged dissatisfied people to repeat what he had said: to feel validation by pleasing one another. By saying Jesus Christ was just a man and not God, Arius predated the teachings of Islam on the divinity of Jesus by 300-something years. St. Peter was performing his Apostolic duty - carrying out the ministry and Traditions that Jesus taught His Apostles - when he was martyred. Laying down his life for the sake of others, he became like Jesus. By speaking the truth and upholding freedom of speech, St. Peter is not just the rock of the Church, but of Western Civilization (Mt. 16:18,19).

St. Sylvester(Abbot († 1267))

Saint Sylvester Abbot ( 1267) St. Sylvester was from a noble family of Osimo, at Picenum. He was remarkable, even as a boy, for his keen intellect and upright conduct. Being instructed in sacred learning and made a canon, he set the example of regularity in devotions and disinterested love and service toward others. At the funeral of a relative who was also a nobleman, Sylvester saw the open tomb and grasped the reality of sin and death. To better serve the Mystical Body of Christ, Sylvester went into the desert to perfect his spirit. He conformed his will and intellect to the Divine through vigils, prayer and fasting: always giving his body a little less than it asked for (St. Jose Maria Escriva). True tohis vocation as a solitary and mystic, St. Sylvester sometimes changed his dwelling place. At length, he arrived at Monte Fano, a removed place, and built a church in honor of St. Benedict. In doing so, he laid the foundations of the Congregation of Sylvestrines. At his Church in Monte Fano, Sylvester guided the monks through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. He also prophesied and exorcised demons. He passed away in 1267; and joined the Church Triumphant in heaven. St. Sylvester nurtured his faith in order for it to grow. Let us follow his example and accept God's invitation to dialogue and become instruments of His will. "Through a plan of sheer loving goodness, He (God) created us; to communicate Himself to us and make us sharers in His own blessed life" (CCC 1).
