Tuesday of the First week of Lent
Book of Isaiah
55,10-11.Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats,
So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; It shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.
Psalms
34(33),4-5.6-7.16-17.18-19.Glorify the LORD with me,
let us together extol his name.
I sought the LORD, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him that you may be radiant with joy,
and your faces may not blush with shame.
When the poor one called out, the LORD heard,
and from all his distress he saved him.
The LORD has eyes for the just,
And ears for their cry.
The LORD confronts the evildoers,
to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.
When the just cry out, the LORD hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew
6,7-15.Jesus said to his disciples:
"In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and do not subject us to the final test, but deliver us from the evil one.
If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions."
St. Eulogius(Martyr (+ 859))
SAINT EULOGIUS Martyr (+ 859) St. Eulogius' family were senators in Cordova, the capital of the Moors in Spain. Eulogius was educated by the clergy at the Church of St. Zoilus. He discerned a religious vocation, was ordained, and was eventually appointed director of the chief ecclesiastical school in Cordova. His prayer, fasting and almsgiving animated his humility, mildness and charity. When Christians were persecuted in the year 850, Eulogius was imprisoned. He wrote his Exhortation to Martyrdom: addressed to the virgins Flora and Mary, who were beheaded on November 24, 851. Six days later, he was released. He likely corresponded with several others who were martyred in 852. A virgin named Leocritia, from a noble Moorish family, had been evangelized by a relative since childhood. She was privately baptized, but was rejected by her parents. She told Eulogius and his sister, Anulona, that she desired to worship and adore Jesus freely. Therefore, Eulogius and Anulona provided her sanctuary. When their plan was discovered, they were prosecuted by the cadi. Eulogius was threatened with being scourged to death and was condemned by the king's council. When the guards led him away, one of them struck him across his face. He turned his cheek and patiently received a second. St. Eulogius was beheaded on March 11, 859. St. Leocritia was beheaded four days later. Although her body was thrown into the river Guadalquivir, it was recovered and buried by Christians.
