Catholic Missal of the day: Tuesday, June 13 2023

Tuesday of the Tenth week in Ordinary Time

Second Letter to the Corinthians

1,18-22.

Brothers and sisters: As God is faithful, our word to you is not "yes" and "no."
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us, Silvanus and Timothy and me, was not "yes" and "no," but "yes" has been in him.
For however many are the promises of God, their Yes is in him; therefore, the Amen from us also goes through him to God for glory.
But the one who gives us security with you in Christ and who anointed us is God;
he has also put his seal upon us and given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment.

Psalms

119(118),129.130.131.132.133.135.

Wonderful are your decrees;
therefore I observe them.
The revelation of your words sheds light,
giving understanding to the simple.
I gasp with open mouth,
in my yearning for your commands.
Turn to me in pity
as you turn to those who love your name.
Steady my feet in accord with your promise;
do not let iniquity lead me.
Let your countenance shine upon your servant,
and teach me your statutes.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew

5,13-16.

Jesus said to his disciples: "You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

St. Anthony of Padua((1195-1231))

SAINT ANTONY OF PADUAPriest and Doctor of the Church(1195-1231) In 1221, St. Francis held a general chapter at Assisi. When the others dispersed, there lingered behind, unknown and overlooked, a poor Portuguese friar who resolved to ask for and to refuse nothing. Nine months later, Fr. Antony rose under obedience to preach to the religious assembled at Forli. As the discourse proceeded, "the Ark of the Testament," "the eldest son of St. Francis" stood revealed in all his sanctity, learning and eloquence before his rapt and astonished brethren. Committed from earliest youth to prayer, devotions and study among the Canons Regular, Ferdinand de Bulloens, as his name was in the world, had been stirred by the spirit and example of the first five Franciscan martyrs who put on their habit and preached the Faith to the Moors in Africa. Denied a martyr's palm and enfeebled by sickness at the age of twenty-seven, he was taking upon himself the humblest offices in his community. From this school, he was called forth, and for nine years, France, Italy and Sicily heard his voice and saw his miracles, turning the hearts of men toward God. One night, when Fr. Antony was staying with a friend in the city of Padua, his host saw brilliant rays streaming under the door of the Saint's room. On looking through the keyhole, he beheld a little Child of marvellous beauty standing on a book and clinging with both arms around Antony's neck. The wondrous Visitor tenderly caressed Fr. Antony. When the Child vanished, Fr. Antony, opening the door, charged his friend, by the love of Him whom he had seen, to "tell the vision to no man" as long as he was alive. Suddenly, in 1231, our Saint's brief apostolate was closed. The voices of children were heard crying in Padua, "Our father, Antony, is dead." The following year, the church-bells of Lisbon rang without ringers while at Rome Fr. Antony was canonized "St. Antony of Padua."
