Wednesday of the Fourteenth week in Ordinary Time

Book of Hosea

10,1-3.7-8.12.

Israel is a luxuriant vine whose fruit matches its growth. The more abundant his fruit, the more altars he built; The more productive his land, the more sacred pillars he set up.
Their heart is false, now they pay for their guilt; God shall break down their altars and destroy their sacred pillars.
If they would say, "We have no king"-- Since they do not fear the LORD, what can the king do for them?
The king of Samaria shall disappear, like foam upon the waters.
The high places of Aven shall be destroyed, the sin of Israel; thorns and thistles shall overgrow their altars. Then they shall cry out to the mountains, "Cover us!" and to the hills, "Fall upon us!"
"Sow for yourselves justice, reap the fruit of piety; Break up for yourselves a new field, for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain down justice upon you."

Psalms

105(104),2-3.4-5.6-7.

Sing to him, sing his praise,
proclaim all his wondrous deeds.
Glory in his holy name;
rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD!
Look to the LORD in his strength;
seek to serve him constantly.
Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
his portents, and the judgments he has uttered.
You descendants of Abraham, his servants,
sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
He, the LORD, is our God;
throughout the earth his judgments prevail.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew

10,1-7.

Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness.
The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;
Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.
Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, "Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.
Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As you go, make this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'"

St. Maria Goretti(Virgin and Martyr (1890-1902))

SAINT MARIA GORETTIVirgin and Martyr(1890-1902) Born in 1890 at Ancone to a poor Italian family, St. Maria was murdered by an acquaintance who attempted to rape her. The killer, Alessandro Serenelli, made previous advances on the young girl, but was driven away by her fighting and crying. She was without protection or paternal care because of her father's death. When Maria was only twelve and watching over her younger sister, Alessandro approached her and threatened to kill her if she would not sleep with him. Protesting that his act was a mortal sin, the young girl resisted. When Alessandro saw she would not submit, he stabbed her fourteen times. Maria's mother found her and carried her to the hospital, but the stab wounds were too severe. Before dying, Maria forgave Alessandro, saying, "I forgive him for the love of Jesus, and I pray that he may come with me to Paradise." While in prison, Alessandro saw Maria in a dream. She was holding white lilies, which she gave to Alessandro, but they burned in his hands. Through her intercession, Alessandro sought forgiveness and received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Justified by grace, Alessandro attended St. Maria's canonization ceremony in 1950. She is the patron saint of victims of sexual violence, the handmaid of the Lord and his Saint of Purity, chastity, young girls and children.

St. Palladius(Bishop and Apostle of the Scots, (+ c. 450))

SAINT PALLADIUS Bishop, Apostle of the Scots ( c. 432) The name of Palladius shows this Saint to have been a Roman, and most authors agree that he was deacon of the Church of Rome. St. Prosper, in his chronicle, informs us that when Agricola, a noted Pelagian, had corrupted the churches of Britain by introducing that heresy, Pope Celestine, at the instance of Palladius the deacon, in 429, sent thither St. Germanus, Bishop of Auxerre, in quality of his legate, who, having ejected the heretics, brought back the Britons to the Catholic faith. In 431, Pope Celestine sent Palladius, the first bishop, to the Scots then believing in Christ. The Irish writers of the lives of St. Patrick say that St. Palladius had preached in Ireland a little before St. Patrick, but that he was soon banished by the King of Leinster, and returned to North Britain where he had first opened his mission. There seems to be no doubt that he was sent to the whole nation of the Scots, several colonies of whom had passed from Ireland into North Britain, and possessed themselves of part of the country since called Scotland. After St. Palladius had left Ireland, he arrived among the Scots in North Britain (according to St. Prosper) in the consulate of Bassus and Antochius, in the year 431. He preached there with great zeal, and formed a considerable Church. The Scottish historians tell us that the Faith was planted in North Britain about the year 200, in the time of King Donald, when Victor was Pope of Rome. But they all acknowledge that Palladius was the first bishop in that country, and style him their first apostle. Bp. Palladius died at Fordun, fifteen miles from Aberdeen, about the year 432, only a year after his episcopal consecration.

St. Goar(Priest († 575))

SAINT GOAR Priest ( 575) St. Goar was born to an illustrious family at Aquitaine. From his youth, he was noted for his earnest piety. Having been raised to sacred orders, he converted many sinners by the fervor of his preaching and the sancity of his life. Wishing to serve God unknown to the world, Fr. Goar went over into Germany. Settling in the neighborhood of Trier, he shut himself up in his cell, and arrived at such an eminent degree of sanctity as to be esteemed the oracle and miracle of the whole country. Sigebert, King of Austrasia, learning of the sanctity of Fr. Goar, wished to have him made Bishop of Metz, and for that purpose summoned him to court. The Saint, wary of that office's responsibilities, prayed to be excused. He was seized with a fever, and passed away in 575.
