Catholic Missal of the day: Saturday, February 25 2023

Saturday after Ash Wednesday

Book of Isaiah

58,9b-14.

Thus says the LORD: If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech;
If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.
Then the LORD will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land. He will renew your strength, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring whose water never fails.
The ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake, and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up; "Repairer of the breach," they shall call you, "Restorer of ruined homesteads."
If you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day; If you call the sabbath a delight, and the LORD'S holy day honorable; If you honor it by not following your ways, seeking your own interests, or speaking with malice--
Then you shall delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will nourish you with the heritage of Jacob, your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Psalms

86(85),1-2.3-4.5-6.

Incline your ear, O LORD; answer me,
for I am afflicted and poor.
Keep my life, for I am devoted to you;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God.
Have mercy on me, O Lord,
for to you I call all the day.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.
Hearken, O LORD, to my prayer
and attend to the sound of my pleading.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

5,27-32.

Jesus saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me."
And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him.
Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them.
The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"
Jesus said to them in reply, "Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners."

St. Tarasius(Patriarch of Constantinople (+ 806))

SAINT TARASIUSPatriarch of Constantinople (+ 806) St. Tarasius was born at Constantinople in the middle of the eighth century. His mother, Eucratia, encouraged his growth in virtues. When Tarasius reached manhood, he gained prestige as a state official and was promoted to consul. Later, he was appointed secretary of state to Emperor Constantine and Empress Irene. In the midst of the court and its highest honors, he lived a contemplative life. Paul, Patriarch of Constantinople, though conforming to the reigning heresy in some respects, had several good qualities. He was beloved for his charity to the poor and esteemed by the court for his great prudence. Touched with remorse, Paul quit the patriarchal see and put on a religious habit in the monastery of Florus in Constantinople. Tarasius was unanimously chosen to succeed him by the court, the clergy and the people. Tarasius declared that he could not be patriarch because the see was cut off from Catholic communion. He accepted on condition that a general council was held to resolve the dispute on holy images. The general council was thus prepared and Tarasius became patriarch. He was consecrated soon after on Christmas Day. The general council was opened on August 1, 786, in the Church of the Apostles at Constantinople, but was adjourned due to rioting by iconoclasts.The council met again the following year in the Church of St. Sophia at Nice. The council declared the sensibility of allowing holy pictures and images a relative honor, and closed with the usual acclamations and prayers for the prosperity of the emperor and empress. Afterward, synodal letters were sent to all the churches, and in particular to the Pope, who approved the council. Never immune to intrigues, Patr. Tarasius was dragged into conflict. The emperor was infatuated with Theodota, the maid of honor of Empress Mary, and settled on divorce to legitimize his affair. In spite of making every effort to gain the patriarch to his side, Tarasius outrightly refused. The life of Patr. Tarasius was a model to the clergy and the people. His table contained only the necessities of life; and he spent his leisure time reading and praying. He gave up his soul to God on February 25, 806, after serving for twenty-one years and two months.
