Book of Wisdom

2,23-24.3,1-9.

]God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him.
]But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who are in his possession experience it.
]But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.
]They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction
]and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace.
]For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality;
]Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself.
]As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.

17,7-10.

]Jesus said to the Apostles: “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’?
]Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished'?
]Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?
]So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

St. Lawrence O'Toole(Archbishop of Dublin (c. 1125-1180))

SAINT LAWRENCE O'TOOLE Archbishop of Dublin (c. 1125-1180) St. Lawrence was born circa 1125. At 10 years old, his father delivered him as a hostage to the king of Leinster, Dermod Mac Murchad. St. Lawrence was maltreated; and was soon transferred to the bishop of Glendalough in the county of Wicklow. When the bishop who also served as abbot passed away, St. Lawrence succeeded him. At 25 years old, St. Lawrence governed the monastic community virtuously and prudently. In 1161, he was unanimously chosen to fill the new metropolitan see of Dublin. Around 1171, St. Lawrence visited King Henry II in Canterbury and was received by the Benedictine monks of Christ Church. The following day, while walking to the altar, a maniac struck him on the head. Everyone thought he was mortally wounded; but to their astonishment, he came to himself, blessed some water and washed the wound. Immediately, the blood was stanched and he celebrated Mass. Like every saint who chose Christ over human respect, St. Lawrence overcame setbacks and opposition. In response to clerical abuses, he sacked over 150 churchmen. When Henry II of England became infuriated with Ireland's monarch Roderic in 1175, St. Lawrence negotiated their reconciliation. King Henry was so moved by St. Lawrence that he left the entire matter to the Archbishop's discretion. St. Lawrence passed away on November 14, 1180. His relics are enshrined at the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Laurent d'Eu, while his heart remains in Dublin's Christ Church Cathedral. He is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Dublin.
