Vitus' father, Hylas, was enraged when he discovered his son's aversion to idolatry and handed the youth to Governor Valerian. Valerian attempted to lead Vitus into idolatry and renouncing Christ, but to no avail. Vitus then fled with Crescentia and Modestus to Italy.
