Wednesday of the Seventh week in Ordinary Time

Wednesday of the Seventh week in Ordinary Time

1. Reading

Book of Sirach

4,12-22.

]He who loves her loves life; those who seek her out win her favor.
]He who holds her fast inherits glory; wherever he dwells, the LORD bestows blessings.
]Those who serve her serve the Holy One; those who love her the LORD loves.
]He who obeys her judges nations; he who hearkens to her dwells in her inmost chambers.
]If one trusts her, he will possess her; his descendants too will inherit her.
]She walks with him as a stranger, and at first she puts him to the test; Fear and dread she brings upon him and tries him with her discipline; With her precepts she puts him to the proof, until his heart is fully with her.
]Then she comes back to bring him happiness and reveal her secrets to him.
]But if he fails her, she will abandon him and deliver him into the hands of despoilers.
]Use your time well; guard yourself from evil, and bring upon yourself no shame.
]There is a sense of shame laden with guilt, and a shame that merits honor and respect.
]Show no favoritism to your own discredit; let no one intimidate you to your own downfall.

Psalm

Psalms

119(118),165.168.171.172.174.175.

]Those who love your law have great peace,
And for them there is no stumbling block.
]I keep your precepts and your decrees,
For all my ways are before you.
]My lips pour forth your praise,
because you teach me your statutes.
]May my tongue sing of your promise,
for all your commands are just.
]I long for your salvation, O LORD,
and your law is my delight.
]Let my soul live to praise you,
and may your ordinances help me.

Gospel

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark

9,38-40.

]John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us."
]Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me.
]For whoever is not against us is for us.

St. Leander(Bishop (c. 540-596))

SAINT LEANDER Bishop (c. 540-596) St. Leander was born to a distinguished family in Cartagena, Spain. He was the eldest of five brothers, all of whom are saints. In his youth, he entered a monastery and trained for many years. He was consecrated bishop of Seville and ministered to the Arian Visigoths. The Arian heresy twisted the original, apostolic faith by saying that Christ was not equal to God in divinity. Bp. Leander converted the Visigoth prince Hermenegild; but the latter was murdered after refusing communion from an Arian bishop. Bp. Leander was exiled; and later recalled by King Leovigild. The king was baptized and received grace through the sacraments, which predate and complement Sacred Scripture. King Leovigild bequeathed his rule to Recared, his son, who also became Catholic. In time, the whole Visigothic nation converted. Bp. Leander passed away on February 27, 596, as Mabillon proves from his epitaph. His relics are enshrined at theChurch of Seville, which has been a metropolitan see since the third century. Its cathedral is one of the most sacred and historical places in Spain.
