Saturday of the Second week of Easter

Saturday of the Second week of Easter

1. Reading

Acts of the Apostles

6,1-7.

]As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.
]So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, "It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.
]Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task,
]whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
]The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
]They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.
]The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

Psalm

Psalms

33(32),1-2.4-5.18-19.

]Exult, you just, in the LORD;
Praise from the upright is fitting.
]Give thanks to the LORD on the harp;
With the ten stringed lyre chant his praises
]For upright is the word of the LORD,
and all his works are trustworthy.
]He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
]See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness,
]To deliver them from death
and preserve them in spite of famine.

Gospel

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John

6,16-21.

]When it was evening, the disciples of Jesus went down to the sea,
]embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
]The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.
]When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid.
]But he said to them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."
]They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.

St. Peter Gonzales(Dominican Priest (1190-1246))

Saint Peter Gonzalez Dominican Priest (1190-1246) St. Peter Gonzales, also known as St. Elmo or St. Telmo, was born to an aristocratic Castilian family and educated by his uncle, the bishop of Astorga. After professing vows, he was made a canon at the local cathedral. He later joined the Dominican Order and preached while working as a chaplain at the court of King St. Ferdinand III. When King Ferdinand III defeated the Moors at Cordova, St. Peter restrained the troops from pillaging and convinced the king to spare the vanquished. St. Peter counseled the noblemen leading the Reconquista and converted many through his prayers and ministry. His spiritual, Dominican family was the impetus for his actions. His apostolate was the overflow of the interior life (St. Josemaria Escriva). Following King Ferdinand's victories, St. Peter retired from court and focused on preachingthroughout Spain and the Mediterranean coast. He often visited sailors aboard their ships, preached the Gospel and prayed for their needs. He also evangelized in northwestern Spain and ministered to Spanish and Portuguese sailors.After laboring for many years, he passed away on Easter Sunday. He is the help and intercessor of preachers and seafarers.

St. Benezet(Layperson (1165-1184))

SAINT BENEZET, or Little Bennet Layperson (1165-1184) St. Benezet kept his mother's sheep in the country as a child.He built a bridge over the Rhone river in Avignon that prevented drownings and further loss of life. He obtained the bishop's approbation, proved his mission by miracles, and began the work in 1177. St. Benezet passed away in 1184 after directing the bridge's construction. His work was attested by public monuments that are still preserved in Avignon. His remains were buried on the bridge itself, which was not completely finished until four years after his passing. The structure was attended with miracles from the first laying of the foundations till it was completed in 1188. Other miracles at Benezet's tomb caused the city to build a chapel on the bridge, where his body lay for nearly five hundred years. In 1669, a greater part of the bridge fell down because of water damage. St. Benezet's coffin was taken up, and being opened in 1670 in the grand vicar's presence, the body was found entire and without the least sign of corruption. The coffin's iron bars had corroded, but St. Benezet's eyes were still bright and sprightly. St. Benezet's body was found in the same condition by the archbishop of Avignon in 1674. The archbishop, together with the bishop of Orange and a large gathering of nobles, transferred St. Benezet's body to the Church of the Celestines with great solemnity. The Order obtained from Louis XIV the honor of keeping St. Benezet's relics until the time the bridge and chapel are rebuilt.
